What About Someone Mat Would Like?

Whoa. Can you imagine Robert Jordan cracking up reading all these? All theories so far have some credibility, but we’ve got to think about Mat’s character. He would give up both eyes before marrying Moiraine or just about any other Aes Sedai. He spends his every waking moment trying to avoid Aes Sedai. (He is such an awesomely funny character, isn’t he?) Anyway, he’s probably not going to be big on a Seanchan either, considering what we know of their formal, hierarchy-filled culture. Mat likes booze, and gambling - not kissing the floor for some long-fingernailed hussy, in a room full of sul’dam and damane. The Daughter of the Nine Moons might just be Berelain! Okay, okay, there’s a lot against it - but consider this. Robert Jordan carefully avoided a relationship between Mat and Berelain while still showing Mat to be attracted to her - remember in The Shadow Rising when Mat made a bow and Berelain was so ticked off after Rand fighting his own reflection and Faile fighting Berelain over Perrin that Berelain stalked off mumbling "...too much like me!" Yet in Lord of Chaos, she asks Rand not only if Perrin is well but if Mat is too. Mat is not at all keen to marry, but if he had to, well... Remember when Mat made a mental note of what a nice bosom Berelain had. He would like her. But here is the clincher, the thing that gives the theory it’s key credibility...

Ever heard Berelain’s last name? That’s right, it’s "sur Paendrag." The same surname as Artur Hawkwing. What if Berelain is descended from Artur Hawkwing? What if, technically because of her blood, she becomes the Daughter of the Nine Moons? (Because the Empress dies or Berelain is revealed to have purer blood or whatever.) I think you’ll agree that if Mat had to marry, he’d pick her, and it’s something so subtle that it’s more likely than this whole Emperess’ daughter thing that Robert Jordan basically pointed a neon sign at. What do you say?

wotmania says: Here is what I say... I think this is very interesting idea, I cannot recall having read this anywhere else. It certainly has some merit - Berelain could very well have a more direct connection to Artur Hawkwing, which would in theory put her in a pretty prominent position among the Seanchan. And I definitely agree that Mat would like Berelain more than just about anyone else for a wife. Good theory!

Great theory! One problem, though. Berelain would probably not want to give up Perrin. She strikes me as a very determined woman.

Good theory... Too bad it isn't true :-P Mat and Beralain would have made a good match, but I doubt RJ would have let him marry someone he'd love at once. Mat is used as a sort of comical relief, and so far in the story, there have been too many happy, perfect couples, don't you think?

Where is the referance that Berelain last name is sur Paendrag?

Posted by wolfman on 19.09.01 17:22
I don't remember thar reference. But I like the implications it may
represent in reguards with the Seanchan. By now we know that Tuon is the
daughter of the Nine Moons.

I can't remember which book it was in, but I read somewhere that all the rulers of Mayene are given the last name sur'paendrag because when Mayene was created, only descendants of Artur Hawkwing where supposed to rule, and since their aren't any more of these known of on this continent, it became a formality.

Man in White

While I agree with the notion that Tuon Athaem Kore Paendrag IS the Daughter of the Nine Moons and Berelain is prophesied to fall head over heels for a man in white (Galad?). However, as Devil's Advocate, Mat is running away from the Seanchan, dragging (after kidnapping) Tuon along with himself. Supposing the Seanchan catches Mat. After excruciating punishments, Mat may be made da'covale. Da'covales wear white, don't they? Berelain may fall for Mat in da'covale white, only if Berelain sur Paendrag is indeed intended for Mat!

Uhm when it says mat likes her boobs or whatever, that doesnt mean he likes her. I mean comon, how many times as mat compared or mentioned that part of the female body?? TONS of times with almost every woman!

And also all the other stuff about the man in white and how Tuon is the only daughter of the nine moons makes this theory wrong, but hey nice try.

lemme tell ya something about this theory...

I wanna ask you, WHEN has ANYONE gotten the woman they want?? Look at Perrin!!! He wanted a quiet life with peaceful wife, and got a headstrong general's daughter that's related to a queen. And Thom says he only joined up with the boys in the first place to keep them out of trouble with the aes sedai, but (hopefully) he's gonna be with Moiraine! That's just two of these many unusual relationships. So, why should Mat get the woman of his dreams? Besides, we now know that it's Tuon, so it doesn't matter.
