Elayne's Embarrassment

Posted by EnlightenedDuck on 21.03.01 00:00

In TPOD (ch.20: into Andor, page 399), Elayne is experimenting withter'angreal. She experiments with using fire on a rod, and wakes up to discover she has done something embarrassing, but nobody will tell her what she has done. Then in WH (ch. 12: A Lily in Winter, page 299), Aviendha is urging Birgitte to take Elayne's activities with Rand as a "fine joke." As they head for the oosquai, Birgitte comments she intends to "get drunkenough to...well...to take off my clothes and dance on the table. And not a hair drunker." "Min did not understand that at all, or why Aviendha stared at Birgitte and suddenly began laughting about it being a 'wonderful joke'."

This makes me believe that the joke is that Elayne did just this at some point in the past, and that the experiments with the rod seem the most likely time.

Also of interest is when Birgitte is desperate to beat Elayne and pleadswith Aviendha to shield her, she whimpers, "Two months" (pg. 297), and offers to let Aviendha off her share in exchange for shielding Elayne. While this may not be because of the same event, I wouldn't bet on it...

Bad Ash says: Good pickup! I didn't pick up on that during my first run through WH. Of course, it could just be some wacky Aiel humor that caused Avi to burst out laughing. But I think we may have discovered what Miss Elayne did that fateful evening.

My only questions are these: (1) Is this the real use of this particular ter'angreal, and if so (2) Where can I get my hands on one? This little puppy would be sure to liven up any atmosphere.

Go Rod!!

The Rod is obviously one of the Nine Rods of Domination!!
It is the weapon of ultimate destruction and was not used during the war of power because its powers were too darn awesome!
Imagine pointing that weapon on an advancing Trollock army, disgusting but effective.

Or using it on the DO himself.

joy buzzer

no no...this would rather have been something on the order of a "joy buzzer". you know the kind, strap to your hand and shake the hand of another.

You hand this rod to a friend, perhaps with a note attached, "Channel into me!"

hahaha

About that rod....

Posted by gothmog on 23.03.01 00:00
Ok so it has been suggested that it is in fact on of the Nine Rods of Dominion.
Every wand, rod etc. which are mentioned usually are accepted as one of theese.
This is in fact somehow connected to the Power. Hence it is very likely on of the Rods.
Remember we do not know what they are actually supposed to do...and using them wrong
would probably have some very interesting results.
Also I was thinking about the Oath Rod (one of the Nine?), it "requires" (i.e. that's always been used) Spirit.
What would happen if fire was chenneled through it? Naked Aes Sedai dancing on the tables?
Very likely. Hmmm this is becoming a theory soon...
Umm...better stop now...

What could be better. Just channel a little fire into it and your off doing the Sa'sara. In the Common room of the nearest Inn. Hope she made some coin, nothing worse than not getting paid for Table dance.

Dirty Theory

Snooping around on the Net there has been a lot of discussion on what exactly that rod did. They're calling it the Orgasmatron -- and that Elayne might have used it with Rand whilst Min, Birgette, & Avi got blitzed to drown out the feelings coming across the bound. Don't think it has anything to do with the Rods of Dominion (or not with that particular kind of Domination).

"two months"

Posted by miruvor on 06.12.01 09:19
I just thought this related to how long since she got some...

Also about two months.

Earlier Birgitte had said she would welt Elayne so she couldn't sit down for a month, if she had to find forkroot to do it. When Rand did what ever he did to make Elayne and by extension, Birgitte, nearly fall over, she said the "Two months" bit, as if she felt one month would not be enough punishment. By the way, what did Rand do, specificly? That sounds more useful than all the channeling, weaponry and karate lessons he's demonstrated.

While most people may wish it so, and while it may be so, I don't personally think RJ had that in mind while writing. It COULD be, and I'd thought of it before (peripherally) but it really makes no sense. It's more likely to be almost anything else, or some kind of inside joke. It's not like they record every single conversation that ever takes place during the entire series.

seems to me...

maybe i'm totally missing something here, but i always thought that comment by birgitte was in reference to the time that elayne got really drunk at some tavern. now, i cant remember off the top of my head, but i know that happened. anyone know what i'm talking about here?

Drunk Princess

Elayne got drunk in Tanchico listening to Thom Merrillin in the Chapter called A Glass of Wine or something close.

It`s in The Shadow Rising.

Maybe she did that and made a lot of money, but Aviendha and Birgitte took it, and that's why they won't tell her about it.

Elayne's embarrassment

Posted by Two Moons on 19.02.03 17:51
I agree with this theory because from re-reading the scene in TPOD it seems likely that Elayne did do something envolving taking of her clothes and doing some kind of dance. And seeing how Birgitte and Elayne share feeling, Birgitte must have felt what Elayne was doing with Rand.

The Red Rod is an inside joke for TWOTRPG players.

Posted by Weird Harold on 20.02.03 00:46
From the Encyclopedia WOT entry:
A ter'angreal in the form of a wrist-thick red rod about a foot long. It feels firm rather than hard and feels even warmer than ter'angreal normally do. The red rod is activated by Fire. It creates visual and aural illusions, but if the user is unwary it may put her to sleep and broadcast her fantasies and dreams.

Obviously one of Elayne's fantasies involves dancing on a table?

"Dance on a table" might be a red herring

Obviously, the comment Birgitte makes states her intention to embarrass Elayne by getting drunk enough to reduce Elayne's inhibitions. She would not have seemed drunk, since she does not suffer physical or mental impairment, and would not have smelled of alcohol, obviously, and if Rand had noticed anything odd about her behaviour, he was not likely to be upset or question his good fortune.

By the way, it seems like hardly any time elapsed between "Two months" and Birgitte's and Min's realization that Rand is ready for another go-round. If he can knock a Hero of the Horn (with a thousand lifetimes of experience in her head) off her feet at second hand, and be...up for it again THAT fast, it would go a long way toward explaining why Aviendha is so nice to Rand (relatively speaking) after the Far Snows part.

The Nine Rods of Dominion

Posted by ekimekim on 12.01.07 06:24
The rod was not one of the Nine Rods of Dominion, and neither is the Oath Rod, or the rod sa'angreal that the AS used to heal Mat. RJ said somewhere that the Nine Rods of Dominion were regional governors. So "summon the Nine Rods of Dominion" means bascically that you are the top power in the AoL.

My gues is what Elyane 2broadcasted" misgth be that she was desperate enough to dance naked for Rand in full public wiev. As Min stated the three of the would fall helplessy and completly in love with Rand.
