I have read most of the theories up on this site and I have not seen this posted yet.
I believe Rand got his inspiration on how to clean saidin from the Eye of the World. He had to wonder how they managed to cleanse it, why were women needed, and why the procedure resulted in their deaths.
I think the reason they died is because they had no where to deposit the taint that they removed from saidin so they absorbed it themselves. Rand used Shadar Logoth as a place to deposit the taint that was removed from saidin.
Saidar was used to make a filter of sorts that saidin was channeled through. Thats why it required both parts of the power to both create the Eye of the World and to cleanse saidin.
Just thought it was an interesting point and if it has already been posted I apologize, like I said I've read most but not all of the theory posts.
Raserei says: Well, I certainly have never seen the like about here. I've seen it discussed, and it very well may be that what yopu are talking about is what has been discussed. So, if you get flamed, don't blame me. I'm not the most reliable of people to trust.
Anyway, I certainly liked this theory, and it explained the funneling and such at the end of Winters Heart a lot better than what I thought it to be.

I like this idea. It's almost scary to think that RJ tied such small details together across nine books, but it's probably true. I always wondered what was really up with the pure saidin at the Eye of the World, but this explains it. Thanks

I think it is very likely that the same technique was used in both instances. It would have been cool if they had mentioned the correlation at some point but it seems to make sense. Why else would women be needed to create the eye.
asked the question
"Was the Eye of the World wasted?"
At the time, all it seems to have accomplished was getting Forsaken killed (who came back anyway). This certainly presents a possible answer to that question. Interesting. I like it.

I like the idea that he got the idea to cleanse the taint from the Eye of the World but I think that he cancelled the taints out by putting them against eachouther and they did the same thing when they created the eye only with people not seperate taints.

I'm pretty sure he figured out how to cleanse the taint through one of the questions he asked the Finns. No doubt the Eye covinced him that it was possible though.
I don't really see how you can compare one taint being used against another to a taint being used against some people. I don't think the Aes Sedai did it the same way as Rand (or even that similar a way), had they, they'd have had to make themselves into an opposite evil to the taint...I can't see how they'd have done that.
...maybe it did help kill a few forsaken, but it did a few other things as well:
1. It allowed the Dragon Reborn to survive an encounter he most surely would've failed otherwise, as Moiraine and the Green Man were not enough match, by themselves, for the Forsaken.
2. It allowed him to counter a massive invasion of the Borderlands (this seems to get over-looked. If you want an analogy, think of Sauron's thrust at Minas Tirith and the Battle of the Pelennor Fields). The Borderlands, as with any of the free nations, will of course play an important role, and Shienar would've been over-run without even a bump, as well as several others, perhaps. Cairhien and Caemyln would've been threatened as well, including the oh-so-important Royal Line of Andor.
3. It was the Repository for the Horn of Valere and one of the symbols hallmarking the arrival of the Dragon Reborn. Consider all the Hunts for the Horn....very few places would be much safer from well-meaning meddlers who could've upset a great many things.
4. It also allowed the Dragon Reborn to directly use Saidin for the first time safely, without being overwhelmed by the taint.
5. And lastly, in a side-effect, it allowed the Dragon Reborn to establish himself as a hero...a savior of the Borderlands. Many False Dragons could be seen as trying to be heroes. The only difference between some of them and Rand is that he IS the reborn Dragon. One can't measure the destruction they cause, because Rand has out-destructed all of them. Guaire Amalasen is not portrayed as 'evil', but as Artur Hawkwiing's principal opponent. Hawkwing himself had more than a few skeletons in his closet. Not all heroes are pure, nor all historical 'villains' evil.
I always felt that Rand got the idea of how to clean te source on the other side of the twisted doorway. I agree about your reasions on the death of the people who made the eye of the world, and SL as a filter though.

I don't know how much information about cleansing the taint Rand could have recieved from the other side of the doorway. Remember that questions touching the shadow are not good, how can you ask a question concerning the taint without touching the shadow if the taint is from a direct action of the DO?
Also, Rand has a ton of things he has to take care of before TG, how can anyone be sure what his three questions were about. If anyone knows any passages that they think might point to the questions he asked please respond, I would be very interested to try and puzzle that out.
"I believe Rand got his inspiration on how to clean saidin from the Eye of the World. I'm very drunk but - It wasn't tainted b4 they sealed the bore - it was the so-called counter-stroke - only cleansed by Rand eventually 2000 years later.
"Rand used Shadar Logoth as a place to deposit the taint that was removed from saidin.
Saidar was used to make a filter of sorts that saidin was channeled through. Thats why it required both parts of the power to both create the Eye of the World and to cleanse saidin."
This part I fully agree with - The taint and Mashy worked against each other just like they did with Rand's wounds - Evils opposing each other!
Five minutes later I think I know what you meant! The essence of Saidar at the Eye was clean and they died without having anywhere to put the taint - Actually a brilliant theory and something RJ is capable of since he said he knew the ending b4 he started writing the series. It's only when you read the series for the 2nd - 10th time u realise this - rather understanding theories written when your drunk!
I know that questions concerning the DO and other related maters are not good things to ask on the other side of the doorways. I also remember that the doorway was shaking itself apart while Rand was in there. That may give some ideas into the types of questions he asked.

the doorway ter'angreal was shaking cos both mat and rand were on the other side at the same time.
that's supported by what the finns say in mat's pov as well as by moiraine when she came out after our ta'veren.

(On a wild ride to oblivion, I lost my mind.)
We know this from his POV's, which let us know two of the questions he asked....in one POV, in I believe TPOD, he thinks concerning cleansing saidin that he had asked whether it was possible, in a place where he knew the answers to be true, and received a riddle for an answer....in another he thinks on his answer to suviving the Last Battle...."if you would live, you must die"...since obviously both these questions would have "touched on the Shadow", how is that possible? very simple. He cheated. He channeled a sword of fire. As to the theory, just because Rand asked the Finn doesn't disprove it. He might have combined the answer he received with Fell's comment and what he learned about the Eye to come up with his final plan. I think it's a great theory!

Now I wonder what riddle they gave him as an answer? Maybe in book 10 we'll find out.
they said that people for miles, heck, all OVER, could see the funnely glow of the mix. but also, what was the paragraph long point of views from seemingly randomly selected people all over 'randland'? a carter in cairhien, the {wo(man) can't remember which it was...} on tremalking (i think thats the seafolk island....) and i think a few other around the world.... BUT WHAT WAS THE POINT?!?!
I dont remember when, but Rand said he knew how to do it from the Aelfinn. I'm not sure what book it is but I know it to be true.
Isn't there a possibility that doing this could taint saidar?

Then all the Aes Sedai would go mad!

Rand wouldn't be an angel anymore!

He would look like a fool!

The Aes Sedai would think he was evil!

They would be mad!
Rand's two wounds: One caused by forsaken, one cause by Fain's Dagger (The Mordeth evil). It's been said, a few times, that the two evils are duking it out, fighting eachother. Crap, if the taint on Saidin is DO related, and DO evil and Mordeth evil, well, "hate" each other.... Why wouldn't SL work to "deposit" all the taint that gets built up, and the two would counter act....
A very powerful base will eat through anything, as will a powerful acid. However, when the right acids and bases meet, the result can have a balanced enough PH so that you could drink it safely..... While either alone would kill ya.
But, that's depending on the fact that the taint would be considered a DO kinda evil, and if it would counter the whole SL greed/man-made evil. Just something to consider...

Hi! I'm a signature virus! Copy me to your signature, and help me spread!
I seem to remember that everytime Rand was in SL that saidin had and echo and was hard to control, like it was being pulled? I didn't notice this until I read WoT a secondtime, but with the obvious importance that SL has on the entire story after WH I paid much closer attention.
Lets remember as well that the Fin gave Mat very straight answers to his questions, but in the end not to the ones he wanted to ask, those sneaky russians. Off memory he asked if he should go home to help the folks in the TR, the Fin answered that he must go to Ruidien. Then he asked why Ruidien and got to die and live again, why, to marry the Daughter of the Nine Moons... I would be hard pressed to to think Rand faired better.
So, I imagine that with Rand's experiences while channeling in SL and the 2 evils being drawn to one another and some far off direct statment/riddle from the Fin that he figured it out on his own.
We all know that he is much smarter than the AS and Forsaken give him credit for, is it far fetched that think that he is smarter than even we give him credit for.
not really..... so, first ill waste some file space
and now ill say good job
And now ill get off my computer
